Penelec s 2021 Tree Trimming to Enhance Reliability Work includes trimming along nearly 4,200 miles of power lines News provided by Share this article Share this article ERIE, Pa., April 7, 2021 /PRNewswire/  Penelec, a subsidiary of FirstEnergy Corp. (NYSE: FE), continues to conduct tree trimming work in communities across its Pennsylvania service areas as part of its ongoing efforts to help enhance electric service reliability.  Maintaining proper clearances around electrical equipment can help reduce the frequency and duration of tree-related power outages, especially those associated with severe weather such as spring and summer thunderstorms. Since the beginning of the year, tree contractors have trimmed along about 1,000 miles of distribution and transmission lines in the Penelec area as part of the company s $39.4 million vegetation management program for 2021. Penelec s program remains on track to complete an additional 3,200 miles of work by year end.

Guest Opinion: Renewing a Rust Belt economy and the planet via innovation

Guest Opinion: Renewing a Rust Belt economy and the planet via innovation Sumi James-Black There is a conscious unbuckling of the traditional Rust Belt economy in the Lake Erie region as new innovations and technologies continue to emerge across sectors. Many in our communities work to incorporate environmentally conscious and responsible initiatives at every turn so as not to repeat the evils of those bygone industries. The irony is not lost that at what once was the chronically polluting Hammermill Paper pulp mill on the shores of Lake Erie is now a plant generating 100 million gallons of biodiesel each year; a medical marijuana production facility; and a regional glass recycling aggregation point. Our family has spent decades revitalizing the former Hammermill acreage with a renewed focus on manufacturing and empowering employees who earn family-sustaining wages.
