assange                                        On 18 June 2021 the German Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier gave a remarkable, moving speech. The occasion was the opening of the exhibition “Dimensions of a Crime. Soviet Prisoners of War in World War II” which can now be seen at the German-Russian Museum in Berlin Karlshorst.    The museum is the building where on 9 May 1945 the German leadership of the Wehrmacht signed the Document of Unconditional Surrender. The speech by the Federal President was also the central commemorative speech on the 80th anniversary of the start of the German war of aggression against the Soviet Union on 22 June 1941.   The Federal President not only recalled the suffering of the Soviet prisoners of war and the crimes against the peoples of the Soviet Union (see box). He also spoke about the importance of historical memory for our present and future.
