A guide to this year s Independence Day events on the North Fork

Fourth of July celebrations on the North Fork are back.   Last year, to make up for the postponement of the 28th annual New Suffolk parade due to COVID-19, community members organized a boat parade with more than 50 participants. A second procession is scheduled for 11 a.m. on July 4, but organizers said this year participants should “keep it nautical,” with no “political or unrelated agendas.”   Some events, however, have not come back for 2021. Shelter Island’s annual fireworks display was canceled for a second year in a row, due to concerns about safety and funding.  Here’s a few other Independence Day events you might want to put on your calendar:

Memorial Day ceremonies return: Here s where to find them

The following is a schedule of events marking the holiday: SATURDAY, MAY 29 9:30 a.m.: A gravesite flag-placement ceremony will be held at Calverton National Cemetery. Preregistered veteran service organizations, Scout units and families will participate; volunteers will be limited. For information, contact Frank Bailey at [email protected]. The Avenue of Flags will be displayed throughout the grounds until June 7.  No public Memorial Day ceremony will be held, but the cemetery will post photos of the flags on its social media channels. MONDAY, MAY 31 7:30 a.m.: Orient’s annual Memorial Day parade begins at the Main Road firehouse and proceeds through the village before returning to the firehouse.

Editorial: With COVID-19 numbers falling, it s time to open up

(Credit: Tara Smith) On May 10, the COVID-19 positivity rate for Suffolk County was reported at 1.2%, averaged out over a week, the lowest it has been since early last fall. Just over half of the county’s 1.4 million residents have received one vaccination; 39.8% have received both doses. And on that day, only 13 new hospitalizations for COVID-19 occurred across the county, according to data from the Suffolk County Department of Health. These numbers show we have emerged from COVID darkness into the light of a hopeful upcoming summer season. As capacity rules are further relaxed, as restaurants and other hospitality industries put out “help wanted” signs, everything points to a broad opening up across our region.
