Thomas Lanier Williams (1911-1983) was born in Columbus, Mississippi. He went to high school in St. Louis, and graduated from the University of Iowa. While in college, he saw the performance of âIbsenâs Ghost,â and decided to become a playwright himself. The Wingfieldâs in âThe Glass House Menagerie, had a close resemblance to his family. His mother came from a line of Tennessee pioneers; his sister Rose suffered from shyness; Like Tom, William worked a job he didnât like. He wrote poetry, felt comfort in movie going, and left home to wander with odd jobs. On Broadway in 1945, âThe Glass Menagerieâ had great success. It won a Drama Critics Circle award. In 1947 he received a Pulitzer Prize for âA Streetcar Named Desire.â Williams received another Pulitzer Prize for âCat on a Hot Tin Roof,â in 1
