But that was until the COVID-19 pandemic struck this southern African country, known as a major producer of diamonds. Like other countries across the globe, Botswana implemented lockdowns and workers were stuck at home, as a precautionary measure to curb the spread and transmission of the global pandemic. These COVID-19 lockdowns imposed a negative impact on businesses, the youth, rural development and economic growth at large, as Botswana s economy shrank by 8.3 percent in 2020 due to deteriorated diamond sales.

Trade unions dismiss Serame’s clai20 000 jobs lost according to Statistics Botswana BAKANG TIRO editors@thepatriot.co.bw Trade unions has poured cold water on the announcement by Minister of Trade and Industry (MITI) Peggy Serame that her ministry facilitated the creation of a total of 10 951 jobs in 2020. Serame made the statement in parliament last week Thursday while presenting the committee of supply budget proposals for her ministry emphasizing that the jobs are against 11 400 target. Unions say that the reality of massive job losses on the ground differs with the minister’s figures. The outspoken Deputy Secretary General of the Botswana Federation of Public Sector Unions (BOFEPUSU), Ketlhalefile Motshegwa cast aspersions on jobs said to be created in year 2020.
