The Day - Hula hooping with a view in New London - News from southeastern Connecticut

I have been a staff photographer on The Day s visual team since 2017. After graduating with a degree in photojournalism in 2010 I have worked across the country, from Ohio to Washington, at strong community newspapers before returning to my New England roots. You can frequently find me looking for slice-of-life feature photos across our community, working on a different angle at events, with a camera in both hands at sporting events, always capturing the storytelling moments to share with our readers. Berkeley to discuss People s Park construction plan – TodayHeadline

BERKELEY — The city of Berkeley is hosting a special meeting next week so that residents can discuss big housing projects in the pipeline for UC Berkeley, with two projects bringing more than 1,500 new housing units to campus. UC Berkeley houses fewer undergraduate and graduate students than any of the other UC campuses, and an estimated 40% of undergraduate students are unable to live on, or even near, campus, according to the university. With a fall enrollment of 30,800 undergraduate students, that’s more than 12,300 students not living on campus or nearby. It’s because of UC Berkeley’s dire needs for more student housing, the university says, that it came up with a long-range development plan that outlines what housing projects the university would like to be completed by the 2036-37 school year, when it anticipates UC Berkeley enrollment to be at 48,200 students, with 19,000 faculty and staff. In fall 2020, UC Berkeley had 42,347 undergraduate and gradua

The unwritten rules of jaywalking on campus

Let’s go back centuries past, to when we were all attending in-person classes on campus. I was a freshman living in Unit 2, and always pushing my short little legs to their limit to make it to class on time. The first time I witnessed The Jaywalkers™, I thought I was witnessing the most beautiful unrehearsed coordination of violating the law.  I paid attention to the unwritten rules of the massive crowd of students crossing the intersection of Bowditch Street and Durant Street. Most notably, everyone stopped on the edge of the sidewalk, where the tip of their toes hung over the edge as the top half of their body leaned over onto the road. Everyone’s necks swung in the direction towards oncoming traffic. If there was a car approaching, students would start walking and cross the street while escaping being hit by the car by half a second. The logic of jaywalking were clear: You want to almost touch the passing car as you’re crossing to make up for the time lost waiting at the

Sliver Pizzeria s Uptown Oakland location; Ayesha Curry s new coffee bar

Sliver Pizzeria heads Uptown Reader Alan G. sent us a tip that Berkeley-based mini-chain Sliver Pizzeria known for its changing daily menu of one vegetarian pizza and one salad has plans for a new location on the ground floor at Alta Waverly apartment complex in Uptown Oakland. He spotted a public notice for alcoholic beverage sales that stated Sliver’s intentions to occupy suite B at 2300 Valdez St. It was posted in September. Nosh contacted Sliver, which confirmed that the new site its fourth restaurant, joining two others in Berkeley and one in North Oakland is still in the works. Sliver CEO Eduardo Perez (brother of Sliver founder Willy Perez, a Cheese Board alum) told Nosh, “We are excited for our new location in Uptown Oakland. We are currently waiting on our final permits. COVID has slowed down the permitting process. Hopefully, we will open by the summer.”
