La Plata Police Department’s Commitment to Excellence – Lieutenant Michael Payne and Police Officer First Class John Piersa were recently recognized along with law enforcement officers from around the State of Maryland by earning the Maryland Highway Traffic Safety Office’s – Traffic Safety Specialist (TSS) Award. LPPD now has six officers who have earned a TSS I Award and two who have earned the TSS II Award.
Lieutenant Michael Payne joins Corporal Tommy Johnston and just a handful of other officers statewide who have earned a TSS II Award.
The TSS program is a statewide recognition of police officers who have attained distinctive levels of experience, training and proficiency in Highway Safety and Traffic Enforcement methods and procedures. State law required a three-member panel of Wayne County chief probate Judge Freddie Burton, Clerk Cathy Garrett and Prosecutor Kym Worthy to appoint a new sheriff within 15 days of the start of what would have been Napoleon s new term on Jan. 1.
The panel voted 2-1 Friday to pick Washington, after two days of interviewing 14 candidates for the job that pays a salary of $128,768 to oversee an office with 1,063 deputies, jail staff and civilian personnel. Garrett and Worthy voted for Washington, while Burton did not, although he declined to say who he d supported.
