I ran the Burning River race

It is called the Burning River because the Cuyahoga River was once so polluted it caught fire. The river is restored so much that it is now the Cuyahoga Valley National Park. The Burning River Trail 50 Mile Race finishes just a few miles from my boyhood home. I taught middle school students for four decades, so I figured that I had the endurance to complete the course. There is also a 100-mile race. I have a gut, but I don’t have guts. I am more a wishbone than a backbone kind of guy. I parked the car at the finish line and caught the 4:15 a.m. school bus shuttle to the starting line. I have been on many early morning bus rides packed with nervous runners. Only this time Steve Anstett wasn’t driving, and I wasn’t going to stand around offering bad race advice while eating the snacks donated by the parents intended for the Angola Hornets.

Festival fun set to return in northeast Indiana

You can almost smell the popcorn, taste the ice cream, the greasy but good fair food and hear the crack and screech of fireworks. Many area festivals and fairs are slated to return in 2021 after COVID-19 wiped out most events a year ago. “Things are definitely happening in LaGrange County,” said Phyllis Youga, executive director of the LaGrange County Convention and Visitors Bureau. Shipshewana’s MayFest went off well, with some new events planned and returning events forthcoming. “We are seeing a great response,” Youga said. “We are very pleased with the recovery.” The popular flea market in Shipshewana resumed in May at 85% capacity. Businesses she’s talked to are also happy with the rebound.

June 28 - Trine innovation 1, Jason Blume works in an ever-changing environment

ANGOLA — As executive director of Trine innovation 1, Jason Blume’s world is ever changing, unlike the days when he was working in industry. Blume is a product of Tri-State University — now Trine University — having graduated with his bachelor’s degree in 2004 and a master’s from Trine in 2017. “Coming from a manufacturing background prior to my career at Trine, I enjoy working with the wide variety of partners I now get to interact with. I am amazed and honored to get to learn about all of the interesting and diverse processes, products and industries that call our region home. Earlier in my career, I had a number of opportunities that could have led me to other states, but I truly believe northern Indiana has great opportunities,” Blume said.
