“Why can’t we have nice things?”
Each of us has this very thought when we visit what seems like any other community around the country. We see amazing, modern quality-of-life features that communities have invested for future generations.
It’s not just about ball fields; it’s about the features that make our community into a desirable place to raise a family. It s things like walking trails, large parks with modern equipment, state-of-the-art sporting facilities, bike trails, outdoor pavilions, water activities, dog parks and all-accessible features.
Last fall, the Terrebonne Parish Council commissioned a Recreation Modernization Task Force to take on a comprehensive review of every topic surrounding recreation in the entire parish. This group of 18 residents from every corner of the parish worked tirelessly to craft a 31-page report of specific, actionable recommendations, with over 1,600 pages of backup documentation to support the findings.
Terrebonne Parish Council votes down attempt to restrict recreation districts
A proposed measure that would have temporarily barred rec districts in Terrebonne from making large improvements to their parks was rejected by the Parish Council Wednesday night.
The Council voted 6-3 against a proposed ordinance that sought to establish a moratorium on the purchase of immovable property by any recreation district until May 30.
The proposed ordinance was introduced by council member Jessica Domangue at the last regular meeting in March to address the potential restructuring of the Terrebonne Parish recreation districts recommended by the Recreation Modernization Task Force.
Domangue said during the meeting the proposed moratorium was designed to ensure the council can implement the recommendations if it chooses to without extra complications.
