SOMERSET After a two year wait, a new and improved Big Red Slide has been installed at Somerset’s Pierce Beach Park. A favorite of parents looking for a little fresh air fun with the kids, the tubular slide has been a fixture in town since it was installed in 1988.
Under the management of Somerset Playground and Recreation Director Barry Fontaine, the town obtained a new slide that was unveiled to the public on May 31.
The original fiberglass slide was open when it was installed in 1988, but it was deemed a danger due to the pitch, curves and height so it was covered. This new slide, made by Austin, Texas-based KOMPAN, a company based in Austin, Texas, is stainless steel. Despite some concerns that it will be hotter than fiberglass, Fontaine said in a recent Herald News article that the slide will be cooler than fiberglass.
