Days of rain in the Delta and other areas of central and north Mississippi this week have flooded homes, washed out roads and forced rescues of some residents. One observer measured slightly over 20 inches of rain in the last three days, said Andy Sniezak, National Weather Service meteorologist in Memphis, of rainfall in Tallahatchie County.
On Wednesday and Thursday, over 7 inches of rainfall were recorded each day. Over 7 inches of rain in one day should only happen once every 200 years, Sniezak said. To have it happen twice in two days is just incredible.
The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency released drone footage of farmland that flooded in Tallahatchie County. Delta Council, which represents agriculture interests, said farmers were losing thousands of dollars worth of crops and chemicals because of flooding in soybean and rice fields, according to the Associated Press.
