‘Local government bodies contributing to attaining SDGs’ 329 RANGPUR, Dec 30, 2020 (BSS) – Despite the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic situation, the local government bodies are contributing to attaining the sustainable development goals (SDGs) in Rangpur district. The observation came today at an annual progress assessment meeting of the activities of union and upazila parishads being implemented with the assistance of the Efficient and Accountable Local Governance (EALG) Project in the district. The district administration organised the event at the Deputy Commissioner’s conference room with assistance of the UNDP, Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation and Danish International Development Agency. Eighty participants including upazila chairmen and vice-chairmen, Upazila Nirbahi Officers, union chairmen and secretaries and district level officials involved in the implementation process of the EALG project attended the meeting.

Integrated development must for effective local govt bodies 475 RAJSHAHI, Dec 29, 2020 (BSS)- Speakers at a participatory meeting today unequivocally called for ensuring transparency, accountability and citizens’ participation in different development works is vital to establish good governance in the local government institutions. Integrated development planning can be a vital means of making the existing local government institutions and the Upazila Parishad and Union Parishad (UP) in particular effective and accountable. The discussants came up with the observations while addressing the annual coordination meeting of the ‘Integrated Development under Efficient and Accountable Local Governance (EALG) Project’ held at the conference hall of Deputy Commissioner (DC) office today.

8012 DHAKA, Dec 14, 2020 (BSS) – It came as a nightmare for Kalpana Sarkar, a marginal woman living in a hard-to-reach area of Kalmakanda in Netrakona district, when she tested novel coronavirus (COVID-19) positive in August last. “I tested COVID-19 positive on August 20 and stayed at home isolation. And after 14 days, I got relief from the disease,” said the 40-year-old Kalpana. Despite tested coronavirus negative, Kalpana and her three family members got isolated in her community as her neighbours started avoiding her family aiming to keep themselves safe from the highly infectious virus. “I know COVID-19 is a highly contagious disease but people of my neighborhood think that it’s a curse from God,” she said.
