Officials advocate for more resilient economies

Several leading officials in their industries have agreed that greater consideration must be given to the link between the health sector and the economy as government seeks to rebuild from the devastation caused by the dreaded COVID-19 pandemic.
Economist Dr Justin Ram insisted that the time had come to move away from wanting to “build back better” to first acknowledging that the island was vulnerable to natural disasters, diseases and virus and “build forward” by building a more resilient economy.
While commending the Mia Mottley administration for its healthy international reserves at the start of the pandemic last year March, Ram said a part of building a resilient economy would be to have buffers in place to better assist individuals and businesses in the event of a future pandemic or disaster.

Recapping recent significant changes in alcohol DTC legislation
We’ve known for some time that 2021 would be an important and impactful year for direct-to-consumer (DTC) legislation, but as state sessions are starting to close, it’s remarkable how active the year has been already. As we mark 16 years since the Granholm v. Heald Supreme Court decision, a catalyst for DTC legislation, it s clear DTC legislative activity won’t be slowing down anytime soon.
Here’s a quick rundown of 2021’s most important developments to date:
Alabama enacted a bill that would allow DTC shipments from wineries effective August 1. Fulfillment houses that want to ship on behalf of licensed wineries must also obtain a license for each warehouse location they’ll ship to Alabama consumers from.
Economic nexus is getting tricky for alcohol sellers
After the
U.S. Supreme Court ruling in South Dakota v. Wayfair, Inc., in June of 2018, the beverage alcohol industry didn’t immediately experience the same level of impact other industries felt. However, over the course of the last two and a half years, complexity has steadily increased.
With several significant changes in 2020, as well as Florida and Missouri (the last two holdouts for adopting economic nexus laws) potentially getting added to the mix in 2021, the situation is growing more and more complex for alcohol sellers to navigate.
