A massive and secretive development dubbed Project Mango is primed for five parcels totaling 170 acres on the north side of Mahan Drive between Interstate 10 and Thornton Road.
Conditional permit materials indicate a proposed development of a fulfillment center with mixed retail goods (823,173 square feet) and reconfiguration of some of the parcels. Much of the site is undeveloped, according to a Project Mango narrative filed with the county. However, three existing single-family structures and a private roadway are also in the project s footprint.
As word spread about the project, speculation swirled about whether the capital could see its first Amazon facility.

Last week, Leon County Government issued a resolution establishing Florida s first Family Day communitywide holiday to be observed the Friday after Thanksgiving beginning this year.
The County invites other organizations, businesses, and institutions to acknowledge the day and honor families at a time when many are together for the holidays.
“Unanimously supported by the Board, Commissioner Brian Welch’s proposal to establish Florida’s first Family Day elevates Leon County’s spirit of community and livability for families of all kinds,” said Leon County Commission Chairman Rick Minor.
“All of us who call the Capital County home know it is a great place to raise a family, and now our annual Family Day can help spread the word throughout our region and beyond.”
Be a Sponsor
Now that we’ve got our calendar of events for the year nailed down, we’re getting sponsorship forms ready for the events. We’ll have forms for each event and various sponsorship levels that are tailored to the specific event.
I’ve written about sponsorships and partnerships in this column before but it’s worth repeating. Events are fun to have, but they come at a cost. Our operations come at a cost. In order to minimize the effect that our events have on our budget, we seek out sponsors to help defray our costs. Because of the COVID situation forcing us to cancel quite a few of our events last year, our revenue from sponsorships took a hit. We need to help make that up this year.

HOUGHTON Between 2002 and 2018, the Michigan Legislature withheld some $8.6 billion in revenue sharing from local governments, leaving cities, villages and townships to adjust their drastically reduced budgets, which has included across the board cuts to essential services such as police safety, fire protection, and public health, as well as public parks, and leaving institutions like libraries ways to figure out how to become self-supporting.
In Michigan, revenue sharing consists of both constitutional and statutory payments. As stated in a 2019 report released by the Michigan Municipal League, constitutional payments consist of 15% of gross collections from the 4% sales tax distributed to cities, villages, and townships based on their respective populations. This amount is set by the state constitution.
