Trillion dollar 6G communications will need graphene Prolific North

by Stephen Chapman According to a new report, 6G systems could become a “trillion-dollar” business and they will be based around graphene. The one-atom thick material was first isolated at the University of Manchester and its unique properties will make it “essential” to the technology. The successor to 5G is anticipated to be groundbreaking, because by using terahertz (THz) waves it may be possible to charge devices through the network. Scientists explained that while 6G will start running at a few hundred GHz but things “get tough” when it moves into second generation 6G, operating at 1THz. According to the IDTechEx report, Graphene Market & 2D Materials Assessment 2021-2031, graphene could prove key to making the technology work, because of its high thermal and electrical conductivity.

iTWire - IDTechEx explores graphene for 6G communications

iTWire Wednesday, 12 May 2021 22:17 IDTechEx explores graphene for 6G communications Shares 6G Communications needs graphene. 6G will initially launch at a few hundred GHz where several diode and transistor technologies are available in the laboratory but things get tough when second-generation 6G operates at around 1THz to get the ultimate response time, data capacity, data transfer and other promised advances. IDTechEx says this will coincide with 6G adding promised user benefits that can only come by handling higher power. The later 6G Reflective Intelligent Surfaces RIS everywhere will do more than smarten up and redirect the beams but actually amplify them, charging your phone and operating devices with no power. Making, manipulating and using the beams all potentially benefit from graphene, the total graphene opportunity being in the IDTechEx report, Graphene Market & 2D Materials Assessment 2021-2031 .
