Harness racing, at its very core, is a career that follows a routine pattern, but at the same time, follows no routine at all. In other words, the everyday routine of each stable is set through a similar schedule – morning feed, stalls, buckets, watering, jogging or training, bathing, lunch, and dinner.
Now these schedules vary from stable to stable. Everything from how far a horse is jogged to how much they are fed to how many buckets of water each horse has can be different. But, the routine of a single stable changes as anything can happen in the barn. Horses get sick, pop a gravel, get mysterious injuries, and more.
Ask Me Ifi Care, bravely and confidently handled by Mike Micallef, scored a game repeat win in Pompano Park’s $11,000 Open Handicap Pace for Mares on Tuesday (Dec. 15), stopping the timer in 1:51.4.
The sharp five-year-old daughter of Manhardt who swept wide off live cover in winning last week’s top event for mares secured her repeat win by going first up in a brave move this time around, edging by the leading and stubborn Prairie Westerngal to score by three-quarter lengths. Crisp Mane closed stoutly to finish third, just a nose back of Prairie Westerngal. Image of a Dream finished fourth while Tempus Seelster earned the minors in the classy field of six.
DGs Caviar extended his winning streak at Pompano Park to three on Monday (December 14) with a sharp performance for driver Andy Shetler.
The four-year-old son of Prime Time Caviar hit the wire in 1:53.2, despite the fact he started from the outside six post and was three-wide until reaching the lead three-eighths into the mile.
The winning margin was a measured neck over Explosivebreakaway (Tom Jackson) with Sooo Handsome (Rick Plano) third, 2-1/4 lengths away. Keegan Ho finished fourth while The Lionking AS picked up the nickel in the classy sextet.
After the race, driver-trainer Andy Shetler said, “He sure is a tough customer. This is his favourite track. He just has that will to win and he can dig forward pretty much forever. The night he made that break early, he just seemed to have that attitude that he wasn’t going to give up until the job was done. Tonight, he was just fantastic!”
