MCMC: Over 2,000 websites blocked for promoting online gambling

MUHAMAD SHAHRIL ROSLI/The Star PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commissions (MCMC) said it has blocked approximately 2,195 websites promoting online gambling as of March 2021. MCMC in a statement dated April 21 said it acted upon official requests submitted by the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) to block the websites for offences committed under the Common Gaming Houses Act 1953, as well as after it received information from members of the public. The regulatory body explained that even though gambling activities both online and offline are subjected to the Common Gaming Houses Act 1953 under the jurisdiction of PDRM, it has formed a strategic partnership with the police to curb online gambling activities.

The ad, which has gone viral on social media with one clip garnering more than 300,000 views on a Twitter account, is presented in a music video format where Muslims in Malaysia are encouraged to place bets through the gambling website in order to earn money for Hari Raya celebrations.

PUTRAJAYA: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has communicated with media platform providers such as Facebook, Twitter and YouTube to remove advertisements that invite Muslims to gamble to get funds for the “balik kampung” trip in conjunction with the Aidilfitri celebration. In a statement today, MCMC said the content would be removed in accordance with the terms of service, as well as the community standards set by the overseas- based media platform providers. The statement was issued following a two-minute video advertisement by a gambling company, which went viral on social media sites, inviting netizens to earn extra money for the Aidilfitri celebration by using the company service.
