Jos, Jan. 8, 2020 Gov. Simon Lalong of Plateau has inaugurated the Special Public Works Programme of the Federal Government in the state.
Inaugurating the programme on Friday in Jos, Lalong, represented by Alhaji Usman Idi, the state Commissioner for Environment, said the programme would address unemployment in the state and country in general.
He added that the programme was also designed by the federal government to tackle other vices among youths, particularly at the rural areas.
“Without doubt, this programme is a great initiative of government to address the challenge of unemployment in the country, especially at the rural areas.

The commencement of the Expanded Special Public Works Programme of the Federal Government has attracted the commendation of Delta State government.
Giving the commendation at the official flag-off of the programme for the South-South Geopolitical zone in Asaba, Gov Ifeanyi Okowa also applauded President Muhammadu Buhari for not making the exercise a political issue adding that the program would help curb unemployment in the country.
774,000 jobs are being created across the country through the program with Delta state having 25,000 based on the number of local government areas.
Represented by the State Commissioner for Information, Mr Charles Aniagwu, the governor advised the beneficiaries to see the opportunity as their little beginning while looking to the unveiling of similar projects to engage more Nigerians out of poverty.
House of Representatives has passed a resolution mandating the Minister Of State For Labour Festus Keyamo (SAN), to stay action on the planned January 2021 implementation of the Special Public Works Programme of the Federal Government.
The reps passed the resolution on Tuesday, saying the programme will not be implemented until a comprehensive list of beneficiaries from the Nigerian directorate of employment is made available.
Under the programme, 774,000 people are expected to be recruited by the Federal Government, with the sum of N52 billion, earmarked in the 2020 budget.
1,000 persons are to be employed from each of the 774 Local Government Areas in the country, for the programme which is said to be a post-COVID-19 poverty alleviation initiative, approved by President Muhammadu Buhari.
