The Victorian Greens have said given the failure of state and territory attorneys-general to act, it’s time for the Victorian Government to lead the way and raise the age of criminal responsibility from 10 to 14.
Despite increasing pressure from human rights groups, First Nations advocates and the Greens to adopt the reform, Australia’s attorneys-general have yet to take action since deferring a decision on the issue more than a year ago.
Victorian Greens spokesperson for justice, Dr Tim Read, said the Victorian Government was at a crossroads.
MPs across the political spectrum have already started to break ranks and support the reform, joining calls to raise the age from groups as diverse as Change the Record, Amnesty Australia, NATSILS, the UN, and the Australian Medical Association.

Advocates for human rights and Australians stranded overseas have welcomed a request from the United Nations for the federal government to facilitate and ensure the prompt return of two of its citizens.
The government must now also respond to claims brought on the pair s behalf by human rights lawyer Geoffrey Robertson QC that Australia has breached international law by preventing them from returning home for over a year due to arbitrary caps on travel, stranded citizen advocacy group Free and Open Australia advocacy group says.
The United Nations Human Rights Committee (UNHRC) has been looking into complaints filed by the two Australians - Jason George and Alex, whose surname has been withheld. The pair are among the tens of thousands of Australians still stranded overseas.

A group of Nationals MPs have backed a scheme put forward by Amnesty Australia to allow undocumented workers access to visas and sufficient wages.
Australia has seen a decrease in vegetable and fruit pickers throughout the past year due to COVID-19 border closures.
The proposed scheme has acknowledged the exploitive wage rates of migrants across the country - some workers earning as little as $3 an hour.
