IMPORTANT: All evacuees from the Lytton area should register online at ess.gov.bc.ca,, call 250-377-7188 or 1-866-377-7188 or email emergency@tnrd.ca. Premier John Horgan addressed British Columbians on Thursday afternoon (July 1) on the state of wildfires in the province following the almost complete destruction of the village of Lytton and the evacuation of several other regions. “All of us, of course, have been shocked to see the images of people fleeing wildfires now raging in Lytton, the Fraser Canyon and beyond,” said Horgan, who was joined by Solicitor General and Public Safety Minister Mike Farnworth.
“We ll be looking at any patterns . ages, gender, any underlying health conditions . the type of facility they lived in, whether it was a condo or a house, and . where we can make a difference and where we can make some recommendations for change.”
Local coroners, like first responders in the province, struggled with the surge in heat-related calls and the response times, she said.
“Prior to the last few days, we had experienced three deaths in British Columbia due to heat in the last several years,” she said.
“So this, frankly, this caught many of us off guard. Many of our health services are first responders. We haven t experienced anything like this in the province previously.”
VANCOUVER The province announced on Wednesday that some drivers with unpaid COVID-19 fines may not be able to renew their licences if they have outstanding tickets. Under the proposed legislation, people with outstanding fines would be notified by ICBC before their driver’s licence or vehicle licence comes up for renewal. “It is not a measure to deny people their licences,” said Public Safety Minister Mike Farnworth. “It is a debt collection tool. Nearly 2,000 COVID-19 related tickets have been issued in the province since the first fines were imposed in August 2020. The ministry said as of May 8, 1,679 violation tickets, totalling nearly $1.18 million, have been processed by ICBC.
