Supporters of the Cecil County Library and Hornberger make their voices heard during Public Budget Hearing

ELKTON — Supporters of the Cecil County Public Library, wearing shirts embroidered with “Love our Library, Fund our Library,” came out to the Public Budget Hearing at Elkton High School Thursday, to voice their opposition to County Executive Danielle Hornberger’s proposed library operating budget cut. Hornberger proposes a cut to the operating budget of 5.7% or $366,202. Her administration has said that the total budget is actually being increased by 12.7% or $818,798 when the increase in the debt service to pay for the new North East Library building is accounted for. Many attendees disputed this framing of the FY 2022 budget and said operating budgets and capital budgets are separate funds that have nothing to do with each other.

SAU 36 faces Carroll s intent to withdraw

SAU 36 faces Carroll s intent to withdraw January 21, 2021WHITEFIELD It was a busy week for the SAU 36 School Board, with a regular meeting on Monday and the first session Public Budget Hearing on Wednesday. At Monday s regular board meeting, the budget was reduced by roughly $165,000. This was initially monies included for COVID contingencies. The District will be receiving at least that amount in the next wave of aid. Apart from the budget, the only other monetary warrant article is a negotiated one year, extension type contract for teachers which is a step increase on the salary schedule ($1,300) and a $1,300 raise for teachers off-step. A total of roughly $197,000. The board will go back into negotiations with the WMEA next year and look at a contract in more depth when they have a better grasp on the future of COVID and getting to where the District can safely have all students in school in person 100 percent of the time.
