On January 12, attorney general KK Venugopal
told the Supreme Court that âKhalistanisâ had âinfiltratedâ the farmer protests along Delhiâs border. An affidavit would be filed in this regard, Venugopal said, based on inputs from the intelligence bureau.
While the court did ask Venugopal to prove his allegation, that the âKhalistanâ story, which began as a baseless claim pushed by sections of the mainstream media, has found its way to the highest court of India in the first place is astounding. The theory claims that groups campaigning for the secession of Punjab â and the formation of a Sikh homeland, Khalistan â are orchestrating the farmer protests.

As the national capital settled in for its coldest winter in the past 15 years, it did little to thaw the tensions between the government and the protesting farm unions. However, in a dramatic intervention on January 12, the Supreme Court bench of Chief Justice S.A. Bobde, A.S. Bopanna and V. Ramasubramaniam suspended the implementation of the new farm laws and set up a four-member expert committee to hear the farm unions. But if they thought this would placate the agitating farmers, they were mistaken, as the farmers refused to appear before the expert committee, saying they would rather continue the dialogue with the Centre. They are also sticking to their demand of a complete rollback of the new Farmers Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Act, 2020, the Farmers (Empowerment and Protection)

Intensifying the ongoing farmer’s protests, 60 villages in Haryana have banned the entry of leaders of Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) and its alliance partner Jannayak Janta Party (JJP).
Khaps along with residents have passed resolutions calling for a boycott of ministers and MLAs of BJP and JJP for supporting the new farm laws. The boycott and protests in these villages have been going on for a week now.
