Fri, 04/09/2021 - 3:15pm Christine L. Philbrook Robbins. Christine L. Philbrook Robbins, age 89, passed away on April 7, 2021 at Waldo County General Hospital, following a stroke while residing at Harbor Hill in Belfast for a short time. Christine was born on July 13, 1931 to Bernice (Morey) and Arthur Philbrook. Christine was one of eleven children born to Arthur and Bernice. She grew up in Appleton and attended early years at Burkettville School and later at the Appleton Village School. She graduated from the Appleton Village High School in 1950. Christine married Neil R. Robbins on May 12, 1951. In the early years of their marriage they built their home where they resided for nearly 70 years for their entire married life. She was a devoted daughter, sister, wife, mother and nana pouring her love out to those who were around her. From the legacy of revolutionary war hero General John Stark, to the booming industrial revolution that occurred in the millyard during the 19th century, little remnants from the Queen City’s past are scattered all around us. Three historical sites in particular all sit within a three-mile radius on the northeast city side between Derryfield Park and the VA Hospital: Weston Observatory Tower, The Town Pound Door, and Smyth Tower. While the old town pound door reminds citizens of our colonial and agrarian past, the Smyth and Weston towers pay homage to two former Manchester politicians, and share a connection regarding Manchester’s former wartime efforts.

Edward Leach Bean. UNION Edward Leach Bean, 92, longtime Union resident, passed away with his loving family by his side on Friday, April 2, 2021 in Rockport, Maine. Ed was born on March 10, 1929 in Rockland, Maine to parents T. Lloyd Bean and Gladys Leach Bean.  Ed grew up in Appleton and attended school there. Never afraid of hard work, he started working at B. M. Clark’s in Union at night after school. He worked alongside his father cleaning the shop and learning the trades.  Once Ed left school he went to work full time at B. M. Clarks and B.M. took him under his wing teaching him how to weld and to become a skilled metal fabricator. These skills became a sense of pride and served him well throughout his working career. B.M. knew that Ed was ready to strike out on his own and it was then that he bought a tractor and began earth work construction. Ed was self employed – he dug foundations, installed septic systems and earth work in the local area for many years. Ed wa
