PHOENIX The Pinal County Attorney’s Office says there will be no criminal charges against a Maricopa police officer following the death of his K9 after being left in hot patrol car last June.
Maricopa police says it will suspend officer Craig Curry for 20 hours without pay after a months-long DPS investigation and internal investigation. Records say he left his K9 Ike in a police car for more than an hour before Ike died from the heat.

A police officer in Maricopa, Ariz., was given a 20-hour suspension after the death of his K9 partner Ike.
The 9-year-old Dutch Shepherd was left inside Officer Craig Curry s patrol vehicle last summer for an hour and 40 minutes during a meeting at the Maricopa Police headquarters.
Maricopa Police policy advises officers to check on their K9 partners at least once every 30 minutes, according to KNXV-TV in Phoenix.
In an internal investigation of the June 26, 2020 incident, Curry said he had left the car with the engine running, the air conditioning on the third fan speed and the coldest temperature setting, and the windows rolled up and doors locked.

MARICOPA, Ariz. The Maricopa Police Department said it concluded an internal investigation into the hot car death of police K-9 Ike in June of last year and the department has issued a 20-hour unpaid suspension to Ike s handler.
“We are deeply saddened by the line of duty death of K-9 Officer Ike,” Maricopa Police Chief Jim Hughes said in a statement. “This was a preventable death and we are taking corrective action to ensure this never happens again.”

MARICOPA, AZ â A Maricopa, Arizona, police officer was given a 20-hour suspension after the hot car death of his K9 partner.
According to a report from the Arizona Department of Public Safety, on June 26, 2020, Officer Craig Curry left K9 Ike inside his patrol vehicle with the engine running while he went into the Maricopa police headquarters for a meeting at 3 p.m.
At approximately 4:40 p.m. Curry went back to his vehicle and realized it had turned off. K9 Ike was located in the K9 kennel in the back of the vehicle panting heavily with glossy eyes from the heat.
