Oconto, Marinette, Shawano counties to host sustainable farm network

MADISON - A network of farms in Oconto, Marinette and Shawano counties aiming to demonstrate environmentally sustainable farming practices has been launched through the USDA’s Natural Resources Conservation Service. NRCS formed the Green Bay West Shore Demonstration Farm Network in collaboration with the Oconto County Land & Water Conservation Department, in partnership with Marinette and Shawano counties. The farms involved will demonstrate the best conservation practices to reduce phosphorus entering the Great Lakes basin and address the effectiveness of current conservation systems used to reduce nonpoint source pollution. “This project will showcase the adoption of environmentally sustainable farming practices by demonstrating their successful use on these four demonstration farms and providing other producers the opportunities to learn and adopt these practices successfully on their farms,” said Ken Dolata, head of the Oconto County Land Conservation Department.

(WXOW) - Health experts drew a connection between PFAS exposure and vaccine effectiveness during a webinar on Monday. The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources and Department of Health Services hosted a virtual public forum to discuss mitigation efforts against statewide PFAS contamination. The DHS said the most common exposure to PFAS is through food as it is found in food wrappings, furniture, grease, and water resistant products. Toxicologist Dr. Sarah Yang said most people have some form of PFAS in their bodies. Plus studies on the side effects are so new that it is hard for the DHS to pinpoint exactly how it might cause harm.

Consumption advisory issued for brook, brown trout in Silver Creek, extent of forever chemical contamination unknown Wildlife officials are asking those who regularly eat fish caught in Silver Creek to limit their consumption to once a month, over concerns of high levels of forever chemicals.   The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources issued the warning Thursday morning, warning that brook and brown trout caught in the Monroe County creek have been found to have high levels of PFOS, or perfluorooctane sulfonate, one of the most well-researched in the family of compounds. The chemical was found in fish harvested from the creek last year.
