Wisconsin is on track to see its worst fire season in more than five years, officials say, after hundreds of unseasonal blazes prompted the governor to declare a state of emergency.
In just the first four months of the year, Wisconsin has lost nearly as much acreage to wildfires as it did in all of 2020. Since January, 365 wildfires have flared across the midwestern state, burning more than 1,500 acres, and 162 of those fires have ignited since the start of April alone.
While no fatalities have been reported from this year’s fires, 26 structures have been lost, according to the state’s department of natural resources (DNR), and officials say it is unusual to have seen so many fires sparked this early in the spring.

Extension specialistsâ workloads monitored
A newly signed law requires the University of Wisconsin Board of Regents and UW-Madison chancellor to develop policies to monitor and report on Extension and outreach workloads of specialists funded by the UW-Division of Extension. The measure pertains to Extension-funded faculty and staff who work in applied agriculture at UW-Platteville, UW-River Falls, UW-Stevens Point, or UW-Madisonâs College of Agricultural and Life Sciences.
âOur state specialists are doing amazing work on the ground and in their communities, helping farmers adapt and grow their businesses and supporting the agricultural industry that is the backbone of our state,â said Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers. âIâm glad to sign this bill so they can continue doing their good work and be recognized for going above and beyond for our farmers and our state.â

Wardens Paul Hartrick, of Oconto Falls, and Gaven Brault, of Green Bay, responded to a complaint of two bucks locked at the horns. The wardens arrived and observed a large buck dragging a dead buck through the woods. Hartrick placed a catch pole on the buck’s antlers and pulled him to the ground. Brault then held the live buck down and Hartrick handed the catch pole to the reporting party to hang on to. Hartrick then used a saw to cut the dead buck’s antlers out of the entanglement. The large buck was then released with no apparent injuries.
