Ark Valley Helping Hands appoints new executive director

Ark Valley Helping Hands recently announced appointment of April Obholz Bergeler as its executive director. âI am very honored to be a part of the Ark Valley Helping Hands team. Iâm excited to work with the board, staff, volunteers, partners and community members to build upon the meaningful services that AVHH provides to our countyâs older adults. I also look forward to engaging with our members in the days to come,â Obholz Bergeler said. Obholz Bergeler will focus on fundraising, community outreach and strengthening the volunteer and member programs. A Colorado native, she has lived in Salida for about four years.

Alpha Omicron celebrates 75th anniversary in May

Salidaâs Alpha Omicron Chapter 770 of Epsilon Sigma Alpha sorority and the Colorado State Chapter are celebrating their 75th anniversary in May. Locally, members will celebrate May 19 at the installation/awards banquet, and the state convention will be held May 22 via Zoom. Salida member Barbara Kurtz is also celebrating her 75th year of membership in the chapter, which was founded in May 1947. Barbara Ritchie Kurtz was a Salida High School senior at that time and remembers being called to the superintendentâs office and wondering what she had done. As it turned out, Evelyn Umbreck was there regarding starting a group for business and professional women in Salida and she wanted Kurtz to join.

Preventing child maltreatment takes many forms, some more obvious than others. Pro-social activities fall in the category of protective factors that may not be so apparent. But pro-social activities, actions that help others, such as volunteering or lending a hand to a neighbor, strengthen families. And child abuse is less likely in strong families. Besides helping others, pro-social activities benefit the helper, too, by increasing moods, social connectedness and decreasing stress levels.Â All of these positives, indirectly, help prevent child abuse. Pro-social activities open doors and create different understandings of what is possible. And it doesnât hurt to get out of the house and spend time with other caring individuals.Â
