Metal Gear Solid 4’s Return to Shadow Moses Argues You Can Never Go Home Again
Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots
.
With the beginning of 2021 absent of major new game releases, I decided to replay the entirety of Hideo Kojima’s
Metal Gear Solid series. This included
Metal Gear Solid 1–
4,
Ground Zeroes, and finally
The Phantom Pain. The series of recursive and self-reflective tactical espionage action games is one of my favorite franchises, but I had never experienced it all in such a condensed period of time. I was genuinely curious to see what new revelations I might excavate by viewing the stories and gameplay as a singular, fast-paced whole.
A prequelâs value should be weighed partly on how it supports the original. Itâs a backstory, after all, but the narrative must be compelling because fans already know how it ends. When it works, the new chapter fills in holes, introduces new revelations and acts almost like a puzzle piece fitting into place.
When it goes wrong, it can make everything worse, diminishing the series altogether. The worst thing one can say about a prequel is that it shouldnât have been made in the first place. With âHyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity,â players uncover a story thatâs worth being told. It features the same visual language as its source material, the instant classic âThe Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild,â but that foundation is used in a way that will be unfamiliar to longtime fans.
