Worldwide, the use of conventional products that guard crops against weed pressure, disease and pests is increasing falling out of favour. Many products are being phased out in the EU and elsewhere.

Therefore, both manufacturers and research institutions are hard at work developing environmentally-friendly ‘green’ products. While there is some focus on development of ‘green’ herbicides, companies are putting much more effort into natural control of crop diseases and pests.

Times have changed over 40 years of teaching 4-H, and Mitchellâs Caroline Vivian can certainly attest to that.
Vivian still has her first-ever 4-H project she taught back in 1981 with neighbour Jean Morris called, âWhich Came First, the Chicken or the Egg?â, as well as other memorabilia she has collected or been given over four decades of dedicated service.

She is the epitome of the 4-H motto: Learn To Do By Doing, and she has done it for 38 years, earning her a prestigious 4-H Ontario Arbor Award, an honour recognizing exemplary volunteer service with 4-H and with the community late last month.

Morris and neighbour Caroline Vivian started their own 4-H life skills club when their respective daughters were old enough, scheduling meetings around the daily chores on the farm. She remembers taking 4-H as a child with the leader a friend’s mother.
