RAPID CITY, S.D. Allegiant Airlines announced Wednesday that it will now offer the route from Rapid City Regional Airport (RAP) to Punta Gorda, Florida via Punta Gorda Airport (PGD) for the entire summer season.
The route was originally planned to operate for two weeks in August, to coincide with the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally in South Dakota. It proved so popular, the airline quickly expanded service. The new route begins June 4 and will operate twice weekly.
“There is a lot of pent-up demand for travel to cities that offer a gateway to great outdoor experiences,” said Drew Wells, Allegiant’s senior vice president of revenue. “It’s no surprise that this route turned out to be so popular. Visitors to Punta Gorda can access the incredible beaches of Florida, while Rapid City visitors can see Mt. Rushmore, the Devil’s Tower, and the rest of the monuments and sights of the Black Hills. RAPID CITY, S.D. Allegiant has announced service from Rapid City Regional Airport (RAP) to Los Angeles, as well as nine special limited routes affording motorcycle aficionados convenient access to the City of Sturgis Motorcycle Rally.
“South Dakotans are going to love our brand of convenient nonstop travel to Southern California, with affordable access to all it has to offer – from its famed beaches and mountains to historic cultural and entertainment attractions,” said Drew Wells, Allegiant’s senior vice president of revenue. “We’re also excited to be able to offer nine special, limited-time routes affording motorcycle enthusiasts easy access to all the excitement and local happenings surrounding Sturgis 2021.”

Travel experts optimistic despite decrease in holiday traveling

However, during the COVID-19 pandemic, that trend has changed with around three-quarters of Americans choosing to stay home for the holidays.
Travel experts say during this holiday travel season, which runs from December 23 through January 3, travel is down nearly 30 percent in South Dakota, consistent with the national average.
