Pembroke council members have approved a motion to once again extended free parking at downtown parking meters for six months but there’s a price attached to the decision.
As parking metre and parking ticket revenue for the six month period running from June to December 2021 had been factored into the bylaw enforcement budget, extending the free parking period until the end of the year means an estimated $25,000 shortfall.

The opioid epidemic has reached Renfrew County with paramedics responding to multiple overdoses daily in the past week.
Chief Mike Nolan of the County of Renfrew Paramedic Service is sounding the alarms bell about the opioid crisis locally as he presented this information to the county health committee Wednesday morning (May 12). He credits paramedics on the frontline of the crisis for voicing their concerns about what they are witnessing throughout Renfrew County.

The City of Pembroke is the first municipality in Renfrew County to declare a climate emergency.
In a five-to-one vote at its April 20 meeting, city council voted to declare a climate emergency, “recognizing that climate change poses a worldwide threat, including localized threats to infrastructure, residents, businesses, institutions, investors, and developers within the City [of Pembroke].”

Councillor Ed Jacyno, who put forward the motion, said climate change is resulting in more frequent instances of severe and damaging weather and that natural resources are not infinite so maintaining status quo was not an option.

Members of Pembroke city council received $235,376.89 in remuneration payments in 2020.
On April 6, as obligated under the Municipal Act, the city released its remuneration list for 2020, which itemizes what council members and those who serve on boards took home last year, both as base honoraria and for expenses reimbursed to them which they incurred while on council business.
