High School Coach Dies During Run

Culver City Observer -   Photo: Bruce Thomson, left, and Richard Greifinger Bruce Thomson was a much loved track and cross country coach and teacher at San Pedro high school. After graduating from Hamilton high school in 1978, Bruce was trained to be a coach and teacher by the legendary University high school Coach, Richard Kampmann. He taught government, health, history, track and cross country for 30 years at San Pedro high school. He was a favorite of students at SPHS. Bruce suddenly collapsed during a jog on Tuesday morning July 6, 2021, and died of uncertain causes. He was 61. Below is an obituary written by a friend and fellow runner, Richard Greifinger. Richard graduated from Palisades high school Class of 1978. I also knew Bruce when he was running for Hami and I for Uni. Bruce, Richard and I ran against each other and all graduated in the same year, 1978. I can concur that Bruce was one of the nicest guys you could hope to meet. -David Ganezer

Hawks Fall Short of State

The No. 15 ranked Mid-Prairie boys soccer team saw their season come to a close Wednesday at Memorial Field as the No. 5 West Liberty Comets earned a bid to the state tournament with a 3-0 win. West Liberty scored just two minutes into the contest to grab the early advantage. Both teams settled in after that, with the Comets controlling possession but playing even for the rest of the half on the scoreboard. Out of the break, things continued in the same fashion until the midway point of the second stanza. Mid-Prairie changed up formations, trying to spark something on offense and gave up a pair of goals in less than two minutes to fall behind 3-0 and that was more than enough for the Comets. After the match, Mid-Prairie head coach Pat Cady talked about the season and his seniors. “I told them as long as we left everything on the field tonight when we left and just got beat by a better team then I would be proud of them. They did that. I am proud of them. This has been the best club

The Mid-Prairie Golden Hawk boys and girls soccer teams came up short against rival Iowa City Regina on Tuesday. The No. 7 Mid-Prairie boys suffered their first set back of the season 6-2, at the hands of the No. 3 Regals in Wellman. The Hawks struck first with Owen Trimpe scoring in the 16th minute to put Mid-Prairie up 1-0. Regina answered back with goals in the 23rd, 34th and 37th minutes to take a 3-1 lead into the half. The Regals continued their push after the break adding insurance goals in the 42nd, 67th and 68th minute. The Golden Hawks second tally came in the 68th minute when Gunnar Gingerich beat the Regina keeper and defense. After the match, Mid-Prairie head coach Pat Cady talked about what his team can take from the match. “Our guys did a good job bringing the ball down. We brought it down one side, then switched it back quickly and dumped it into a danger area. Owen Trimpe was already on his way to go get it. Their keeper was worried he was going to go back post so
