Fortuitous must provide further details about the parking plan in the coming weeks.

The Goldsboro-Wayne branch of the NAACP will host a showing of “Wilmington On Fire,” a documentary on the Wilmington massacre of 1898 that became the springboard of white supremacy and Jim Crow segregation in the South, on July 30. The NAACP offered a viewing of the film in May, but multiple requests from the public resulted in the NAACP hosting another showing of the film, said Pat Ford, a member of the NAACP board. The event, “What’s In A Name: History of Charles B. Aycock’s Involvement in Black Voter Suppression,” is open to the public at no cost on July 30 from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the Wayne County Public Library, 1001 E. Ash St.

Ford returning to Oxford PD as interim chief

She will take over for the current chief, Alvin Coley, who is retiring on Aug. 1. City officials said Ford, who had worked for the department for more than two decades, will serve as chief while they search for a permanent hire. Coley has been Oxford’s police chief since 2013, and is retiring after nearly 35 years in law enforcement with the N.C. State Highway Patrol and the Sharpsburg Police Department near Rocky Mount. Ford has been a detective for the Oxford police in addition to being the department’s captain. She completed Basic Law Enforcement Training at Vance-Granville Community College and started out as a Creedmoor Police Department patrol officer before joining the Oxford police in 1997.
