The Leon L. Williams San Diego County Human Relations Commission will call for the California Interscholastic Federation to address racism in youth athletics after incidents at a recent basketball game between Coronado High and Escondido’s Orange Glen High, including students throwing tortillas.
All 27 members of the commission voted Monday to send a letter to the CIF expressing concerns about the altercation at the game and calling for the federation to provide cultural training to coaches and parents to prevent similar conflicts.
The commission agreed to send letters to other organizations, including the San Diego County Office of Education, and to recommend additional actions to address racism in high school athletics and other educational activities. The commission did not discuss calling for Coronado to forfeit the championship title.
In the context of controversy over tortillas, the committee calls for transparency and more youth resources
