Numerous entities pharmacies, schools, cinemas, religious organizations and more said Friday they will continue to require face masks to prevent spread of COVID-19 in the short term, despite the federal government relaxing rules for fully vaccinated Americans.
That cautious approach comes amid two days of churn and some confusion after the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and President Joe Biden announced Thursday that fully vaccinated people do not need to wear masks in public, with some exceptions such as on public transit or airplanes.
Gov. J.B. Pritzker said Thursday he would revise the state s strict face covering rules. And the Illinois Department of Public Health is working to adjust guidance documents in response, according to a memo.

Elmhurst School District 205 decided to make middle school French classes largely remote, which surprised at least one school board member. (David Giuliani/Patch)
ELMHURST, IL Last Wednesday, Elmhurst School District 205 said in a mass email that it was excited to announce that it would offer in-person classes five full days a week next fall.
Two days later, some parents learned about an exception. Apparently, even the school board was unaware.
In an email, the district informed families of middle school students who are taking French next year that their classes would be largely remote. It said it would have one French teacher for Bryan, Churchville and Sandburg middle schools.
A substitute teacher and parent said she witnessed students being sent to school bathrooms that were crowded to take COVID-19 saliva screening tests.
Dana Van Sleet said what the district s website said was going to happen was not how it went down. On the district’s website, it said we’re going to do this mandate … if the student doesn’t submit a sample, the parents will be notified by email and if it continues to happen, the student will be moved to remote learning, Van Sleet said in an interview with
DuPage Policy Journal. But, kids that did not have their sample with them were corralled into the library and … these are sixth through eighth graders and they’re being given the test to do themselves and told to go to the bathroom.

ELMHURST, Ill. (WLS) Elmhurst school officials are holding firm to their plan to saliva test students for COVID-19, allowing a return to in-person school four days a week.
Elmhurst District 205 school board members looked to ease parents concerns at a meeting Thursday night, but did not budge on their plan for school-wide testing.
Tubes of saliva will be the price of entry for students to return to regular classroom learning starting Monday. I feel like it s totally fine. It s just spit. My sister goes to U of I and she s been doing the spit test for the whole time she s been there so I feel like there s no issue with it, said Emma Garvey, senior at York High School.
