Governor s Office aids water users in reaching historic crop-saving settlement amid extreme drought | News

BOISE – As the State of Idaho faces its worst drought in years, a group of water users in Blaine County – with the aid of the Governor’s office, House Speaker Scott Bedke, the Idaho Department of Water Resources and others – came together to reach a historic settlement this week, ensuring the continued growth of crops in the area. Gov. Brad Little commended the ground water and surface water users in Blaine County for reaching a settlement to avoid the curtailment of about 140 ground water users on approximately 23,000 acres of land in the Bellevue Triangle area, while also ensuring that senior water users on Silver Creek and the Little Wood River are mitigated for their injury from ground water pumping in this extreme drought year.

Bellevue-area water curtailment removed

TWIN FALLS — The water curtailment decision for the Bellevue Triangle area has been lifted. Idaho Speaker of the House Scott Bedke sent out a press release Thursday announcing a settlement between surface water users along the Little Wood River and ground water users in the Bellevue Triangle. The Idaho Department of Water Resources declined to comment on the negotiations but said it will release more information Friday. “Today is a good day, because Idahoans came together to solve that problem,” Bedke said in his announcement. The curtailment was in place for seven days before the 2021 irrigation season agreement was reached. An alternative supply of water from the Twin Falls Canal Company will support the surface water users who take water from the Little Wood River.

Irrigators ordered to stop pumping groundwater

This order affects Water Districts 37 and 37B, in the Wood River Valley south of Bellevue. The curtailment order goes into effect Thursday. All of the affected entities with junior ground water rights were notified by mail on Monday. The department director, Gary Spackman, heard testimony for six days earlier in June to determine if curtailment was necessary to protect senior water rights holders.
