Snow accumulations of 4 to 12 inches in areas above 2,000 feet over the next few days is likely to impact mountains roads and passes, including along state routes 299, 3 and 36, with motorists advised to carry chains. “Travel could be very difficult to impossible,” the advisory states. “The hazardous conditions could impact the morning or evening commute.”

Major Winter Storm: Two Feet of Snow Forecast to Fall in Areas as Low as Berry Summit

A major winter storm will hit Northwest California between Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday evening, dropping 18 to 30 inches of snow along local highways at elevations as low as 2,500 feet. Eureka’s National Weather Service office reports that 18 to 24 inches of snow is expected along Highway 299 at Berry Summit, and 24 to 30 inches of snow is expected along Highway 36 near the Humboldt-Trinity border. “Large snowfall amounts are likely but confidence is low on the exact snow levels,” the NWS stated. “Consider changing travel plans or taking an alternate route. Major impacts are possible with this storm due to utility outages, downed trees, and road closures.”

NWS Warns of Walloping Winter Storm

UPDATE: Snow levels could go as low as 500 feet, according to information from the Eureka office of the National Weather Service on Tuesday morning, but are expected to quickly rise above 1,000 feet. The heaviest snow is anticipated tonight with a second round Wednesday morning. PREVIOUS: An approaching winter storm is expected to pack a wallop Tuesday through Wednesday, bringing significant snowfall, heavy rains and high winds that could knock out power, down trees and close roads. The Eureka office of the National Weather Service states the forecast currently calls for heavy snowfall of 1 to 2 feet above 1,500 feet and possibly more at higher elevations, with State Route 3, Berry Summit and Lord Ellis Summit on the State Route 299 and the Collier Tunnel on State Route 199 in the impacted zone.
