When the former power plant along the Berm Highway was brought down earlier this year, it came as a surprise to many in the area. The Big Z received notice of the demo a few days prior and relayed that information to our listeners, but a bill passed out of the Illinois Senate would require a 60-day notification prior to commencing a demolition.

The initiative amends the Environmental Protection Act by requiring the owner of a coal power plant to notify both the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency and populations within 25 miles of the site at least 60 days before commencing a demolition. There’s been a change to the length of the road closure on a portion of the Berm Highway this weekend. Due to the demolition of the smokestacks at the former power plant and the aspect of wind speed and direction coming into play, the road will now be closed from 9am today (Saturday) until maybe as late as 5pm Sunday between Enviro Way and Locks and Dam Way.
