As New York City enters a new phase of the COVID-19 pandemic, an unprecedented array of economic devastation trails in its wake. In the West Bronx, looming damage can be seen in the large number of eviction filings, not executed and on hold thanks to a state-issued moratorium.
Even as lawmakers work to extend the moratorium, eviction filings persist. And they’re most prevalent within the Bronx’s 14th City Council District, according to a March report by the Association for Neighborhood and Housing Development [ANHD]. The housing think tank found 40,000 eviction proceedings initiated in New York since March 2020, with the bulk concentrated in the Bronx.

On December 21, 2020, environmental crimes investigators in the western Argentine province of Neuquén carried out a raid against a company that handles fracking waste in the heart of the Vaca Muerta shale basin, a booming oil and gas field in northern Patagonia. They seized a cache of documents, and opened an investigation into the potential illegal handling of massive volumes of fracking waste.
The raid on the Argentine waste company Comarsa by the office of Environmental Crimes and Special Laws, a unit under Neuquén’s chief prosecutor, was prompted by a lengthy criminal complaint filed to the office just a few days earlier by a group of environmental lawyers. Within the complaint, the lawyers document what they describe as a decade-long illegal accumulation of toxic fracking waste at multiple sites in the city of Neuquén, the largest city in Patagonia with a population over 300,000. Cabrera, who is running for Bronx Borough president, noted that many New Yorkers have lost income during the shutdown created by Covid-19 and that parking violations and tickets may have come up unexpectedly during a time of financial stress.
“This bill is helping the little guy, the everyday car owner who has been confused about their responsibilities as it relates to moving their cars during Covid, and [it] specifically targets those who have not paid their summonses,” Cabrera said. “This legislation would ease that burden while helping New Yorkers keep access to their vehicles when they need them most.”
