Massiel Deoleo fled her husband, James Cox, several times during their volatile marriage. Once, fearing for her safety, she disabled surveillance cameras he set up, grabbed some belongings and escaped out a window in the middle of the night.
But each time she went back to Cox, or, after her most recent departure several months ago, she kept in contact with him. She believed it was a good idea to keep him in their 5-year-old daughter’s life, her family said.
After she left Cox several months ago, Deoleo moved to Mahwah and planned to go back to school. But those plans and Deoleo s life were suddenly snuffed out when, two weeks ago, Cox shot and killed Deoleo in front of their daughter on Good Friday, before turning the gun on himself at the Carlstadt home he shared with his parents.

Rescue teams from Paramus and Fair Lawn extricated a driver and front-seat passenger after their car got wedged beneath a tractor-trailer in a horrific pre-dawn crash Saturday on Route 17, authorities confirmed.
The Amazon tractor trailer was parked on the side of the northbound highway in front of the Suburban Diner when it was slammed into shortly before 1:30 a.m., they said.
Members of the Paramus Rescue Squad and Fair Lawn Heavy Rescue worked intently to free the critically injured victims.
The driver remained in critical condition early Saturday, while the front-seat passenger was listed as critical but stable, Bergen County Chief of Detectives Robert Anzilotti said.
Sheriff’s officer charged with forgery for false doctor’s note, authorities allege

A Bergen County sheriff’s officer was suspended without pay after being charged with forgery, authorities said Thursday.
Peter Servidio, 41, of Paramus, was scheduled for a court hearing later this month, according to the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office. He faces one count of fourth-degree forgery.
“An investigation was conducted by [the prosecutor’s office] which revealed that the suspect turned over a note that appeared to be issued by a doctor, but was in reality forged by the suspect,” a prosecutor’s office detective said in an affidavit filed in the case.

A 7-year-old Leonia girl was hospitalized with serious injuries after she was run over by an SUV driven by a relative in what authorities said was a tragic accident.
It was dark and raining steadily when the driver dropped off four passengers in a parking lot near the corner of Grand Avenue and Fort Lee Road shortly before 8:30 p.m. Monday, according to a borough police report.
The girl inadvertently moved into the path of the Ford Explorer as it exited the lot and was run over by a front tire, it says.
She was rushed to Hackensack University Medical Center with chest injuries that weren’t considered life-threatening.
