How MaXhosa successfully uses Facebook and Instagram to gain a global audience

Laduma Ngxokolo is passionate about being a global brand that is proudly African. The most important thing to the MaXhosa Africa founder, however, is that even with the global success, the brand is celebrated, worn and loved at home.
In an IG Live discussion with Facebook Africa s Regional Director, Nunu Ntshingila, the award-winning designer, revealed just how important it is for his brand to be celebrated at home. The greatest highlight of my career was to be embraced at home. I can go everywhere and get complimented for our designs, but if I wasn t appreciated here at home and people were not voting with their money, I wouldn t sleep well at night because at the end of the day we are here to protect our own dreams, he said.

Created by Thabiso Mjo, winner of Design Indaba’s Most Beautiful Object in South Africa contest, the ceramics offer cheery hues and inventive design. Mjo’s most recent collection, Presents from Joburg, focuses on ceramics and stems from her community-oriented approach. “The range is made up of items centred around serving, underpinned by the idea of coming together at the end of the day and sharing a meal with your chosen community. It’s about treasuring those moments spent together around the table,” she explains. The expanding range will start off with seven pieces ranging from platters, vases, planters and fruit bowls, to shakers, side plates, candle holders and dip bowls. This week, the Cable News Network (CNN) will feature two South African stylists, Sindiso Khumalo and Wendy Ntinezo, as it showcases textile and fashion trends across the continent on its African Voices Change Makers programme sponsored by Nigeria’s leading telecommunications provider, Globacom.
Khumalo and Ntinezo are frontline style icons who have made their mark in the fashion and creative industry in Africa and also internationally.
While Khumalo, a specialist in women’s textile designs lives and works in Hackney, East London; she was shortlisted in 2012 for the Elle Magazine Rising Star Competition and showcased her debut SS13 collection at the Awards.
