Lawmakers Eye Casino-Backed Gun Ban Despite Broad Opposition

Listen to this story. SB452 gives casinos of a certain size the ability to call the police whenever anyone but law enforcement carries a firearm onto their property without staff having to first give them a warning. Senate Majority Leader Nicole Cannizzaro presented the measure during a four-hour joint session of the Senate and Assembly Judiciary Committees Saturday. “Private businesses already have the ability to prohibit firearms on their premises. That is something they may already do, and we are trying to seek to make sure that is something they can properly enforce,” said Cannizzaro. While presented as a matter of public safety, opponents saw it as a dramatic violation of civil liberties.

Nevada progressives upset bills stall in Dem-led statehouse

Nevada progressives upset bills stall in Dem-led statehouse SAM METZ, AP / Report for America May 14, 2021 FacebookTwitterEmail CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) Downcast Democratic Party-aligned groups and activists rebuked leaders from their own party Friday after proposals they championed to repeal the death penalty and expand tenant protections failed to make it past a key legislative deadline. Bills that made it through one chamber either the state Senate or Assembly must advance out of committee in the opposite chamber in order to remain under consideration in the legislative session. Proposals to limit police use of force, crack down on housing discrimination and ban law enforcement agencies from using ticket and arrest quotas passed Friday, while efforts to limit when the death penalty can be sought and when landlords can take tenants security deposits and charge late fees stalled amid heated opposition and a lack of negotiated compromise.

Governor, top Democrat call Nevada death penalty repeal dead By KEN RITTER and SAM METZMay 13, 2021 GMT CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) Efforts to repeal Nevada’s death penalty law in the current Legislature are dead, Gov. Steve Sisolak and the top Democrat in the Legislature said Thursday. The governor issued a statement saying he saw “no path forward” for a bill that passed the Assembly on party lines with Democrats in support but that had not received a hearing in the Senate ahead of a Friday deadline. Senate Majority Leader Nicole Cannizzaro said lawmakers did not reach a consensus. She called a pact unlikely before the Legislature ends May 31 and said lawmakers would focus on other measures affecting police practices and the court bail system.
