Democratic legislative leaders struck a similar note in statements issued minutes after Sisolak’s announcement.
Senate Majority Leader Nicole Cannizzaro, who has spent weeks stiff-arming questions about when the bill would get a hearing, said finding consensus on the bill was “unlikely” over the remaining two weeks of the session.
“This decision understandably will disappoint many advocates, but it will also not change our commitment to moving other critical legislation this session reforming policing practices, the bail system, and other important aspects of our criminal justice system,” Cannizzaro added.
Assembly Speaker Jason Frierson, who saw AB 395 pass on a strict party-line vote in his chamber, also looked to console activists who have spent decades trying to bar capital punishment in Nevada.

LAS VEGAS (KTNV) â A bill in the Nevada Legislature, SB 420, would force insurance companies participating in the state s Medicaid program to offer a public option plan designed to lower insurance premiums across the board by 15% over four years.
The public option plans would by law have premiums 5% cheaper than the second-lowest silver plan offered.
Senate Majority Leader Nicole Cannizzaro, (D) District 6, has been pushing hard for the bill to become law late in the legislative session saying it would help provide reasonable coverage to the roughly 350,000 people who are uninsured in Nevada.

CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) Lobbyists representing doctors and hospitals clashed with affordable health care advocates on Tuesday in the Nevada Legislature’s first hearing on a proposal to create state-run health insurance plans that could compete with private insurance companies on the state’s health insurance exchange.
Nevada is one of many states that is considering some form of what’s called a “public option” to expand access and make health care more affordable. Washington passed a public option proposal in 2019 and Connecticut and Oregon are also considering similar proposals.
Senate Democrats Unveil State-Sponsored Public Option Healthcare Bill
Senate Democrats have unveiled a bill that would create a state-sponsored public health care option in Nevada.
Senate Bill 420 would require insurers that bid to provide coverage to the state’s Medicaid population to also apply to offer a public option plan. Similar to coverage offered under the federal Affordable Care Act, the plans would be operated by private insurers and sold on and off the state’s healthcare exchange.
Senate Majority Leader Nicole Cannizzaro said a public option will help expand access to health care for underserved communities, especially those in rural areas.
