And also of all citizens by trying to stay at home; as well as of private companies and the public sector by promoting remote work. Less mobility means less contagion, she stressed.
Economy
This implies essential activities for people s lives in an emergency context, such as the provision of food, healthcare, electricity, water and telecommunications services, but also sectors such as agriculture, fishing, manufacturing, construction always following the protocols established in due course. That is why we had to adopt this truly harsh measure; we understand that it is a harsh measure for people and even for the Government itself (.), we hope it will help us control the contagion level and hopefully lower the number of people who must be admitted to healthcare facilities, Bermudez expressed.
The President of the Republic Francisco Sagasti on Tuesday night announced that Lima and nine regions will be under lockdown from January 31 to February 14 to counter <a href="https://andina.pe/ingles/noticia-peru-coronavirus-cases-total-1107239-1022736-have-been-discharged-831389.aspx"target=" blank"
However, the reality of the figures and the exceeded capacity at hospitals made it necessary to take this measure. This lockdown is planned for 15 days in extreme risk areas. We hope that following these measures, if they are respected by citizens, we can go from extreme to high or moderate level. Our perspective is that the lockdown does not exceed this period, she expressed. This is a localized quarantine. From the Government, we have tried to avoid reaching an extreme situation. Our medical and health staff members have reached an extreme situation, and we must give them a break, she added.
Moreover, Bermudez said that despite medical efforts a hard situation has been observed in extreme risk regions, which is why she called for understanding. We know that we are exhausted, but a determined commitment to the measures is essential, she expressed after assuring that there will be support from the National Police of Peru and the Armed Forces.
Remarks were made during a press conference held at the Government Palace in Lima.

Defense Minister Nuria Esparch and Interior Minister Jose Elice were in the principal avenues and strategic locations throughout Lima and Callao on Saturday night, supervising the control work done by law enforcement officers to verify the compliance with the mandatory social immobilization (curfew) decreed by the Government within the framework of the fight against the coronavirus pandemic.
As is known, the nighttime curfew in Metropolitan Lima and Callao region was brought forward to 9:00 p.m. as both areas face a high-level risk linked to a second COVID-19 wave.
Additionally, the use of private vehicles in Metropolitan Lima and Callao was restricted on Sundays. Both measures are in force until January 31.
