Several members met to talk about endurance of the village s downtown during the pandemic, as they look forward with a strong sense of optimism.

Area schools plan for 2021 prom, graduation

Sturgis Journal School districts in St. Joseph County are doing what they can amid the pandemic to give high school seniors a “normal” year-end celebration of prom and graduation. It has been more than a year since students began to integrate terms like “social- distancing,” “pods” and “pandemic” into daily life. The coronavirus has delayed or canceled numerous events in the past 14 months, but school officials throughout the county said they are putting into place plans to make events like prom and graduation happen, while still adhering to pandemic guidelines. Here is a roundup of plans at some of the schools in the Journal area. 

St Joseph County United Way sets upcoming food distributions

St. Joseph County United Way has announced several fresh-food distributions. Volunteers will distribute food boxes 4:30-6:30 p.m. March 18 at Colon High School,, 400 Dallas St.; 3-5 p.m. March 18 at Mendon Community Schools, 148 Kirby Road; 10 a.m.-noon March 20 at Fabius Township Fire Station, 15149 Broadway Road; and 4-6 p.m. March 25 at Doyle Community Center, 310 N. Five Colon teachers received funding

Sturgis Journal Colon Community Schools has benefited from the Nola and George Cummings Family Foundation Fund, held at Branch County Community Foundation. Five teachers in the district received funding from the December grant cycle of Cummings Family Foundation, a total of $14,000. Brendan Hoekstra, band director, submitted a grant application and received some needed items, including a sousaphone and baritone for marching band; 50 new music stands and chairs for 6-12 grade band room; and a new percussion work station. Musical instruments of that size and expense are typically school property because they are cost-prohibitive for nearly any student to purchase. “This grant is huge to me,” Hoekstra said.
