Calum Best: 'I'm proud to be my dad's son, but I also had an alcoholic parent'

From playboy to campaigner Credit: Rex/Brett Cove A lot of piña coladas have gone under the bridge since I first met Calum Best on a beach in Fiji back in 2005, when he was a contestant on ITV’s first-ever Love Island. He was launching what would become a prolific TV career, spanning almost two decades and a mind-boggling 45 reality shows around the world. ‘Do you remember that trip? It was the best!’ he says, as we catch up in a sunny courtyard in Fulham, south-west London, close to his flat. ‘When I got kicked off they asked me if I wanted to stay. I was 24, lying on a beach surrounded by beautiful women, drinking cocktails – hell yes, I was going to stay!’

These medieval battles prove Britain's nations have never been truly separate

Second only to COVID-19 recovery, the continued unity of the United Kingdom is the key political issue across the British Isles. Debates about independence have dominated Scottish politics for the past decade, while in Wales, polling suggests there is increasing support for Welsh independence. In Northern Ireland, meanwhile, many believe the country will join the Republic of Ireland within the next 25 years. A recent episode of BBC One’s The Big Questions asked “is feeling British over?” and discussed how a feeling of Britishness differs from the respective nationalities that make up the United Kingdom. Whether or not there is any meaningful prospect of any part of the UK breaking away, it is difficult to escape the conclusion that feelings of a distinct Britishness are increasingly rare.
