An impressive 63 teachers were nominated: Amanda Mowrey, Rhiannon Oldfield, Dave Hankin, Margot Tan, Laura Hacker, Mr. M., and Ken Vargas, Ahriana Tarango, Alecia Page, Amanda Sharrer, Ann Tolman, Barb Anderson, Bobby Warren, Brandi Baker, Candice Price, Carey Hudgings, Cathy Dodd, Cathy Jo Ewing, Cheryl Wickizer, Chris Harold, Christine Smith, Colette Schwenk, Damien McDaniel, Dan Hill, Debra Paciorek, Denise Greer, Diana Fletcher, George Conley, Geri Gardea, Gerine Smyers, Glen Lieberry, Hunter Harsley, Jaci Tanner, Janice Hoyt, Jeff Battese, Jenna Gregory, Jessica Gore, Jesslyn Davis, Jim McBride, Joy Wilson, Julie Rasmussen, Katy Goldman, Kevin Hull, Kristi

Roof of middle school gym to be repaired

Such a deal. The Payson school board last week happily accepted a great deal on roof repairs for the leaky Rim Country Middle School gym. Five Oliver LLC offered to do the work for $111,000 — less than a third of the $329,000 high bid. The state will pay most of the cost — except for $300. That’s the cost of the roof repair over a storage area, since the state will only foot the bill for the part of the gym actively used by students. The contract underscores the value of competitive, sealed bids when it comes to getting stuff done. The other bids were $134,000 and $213,000.

PUSD school lunch workers honored

National Lunch Workers Day started in 2020, inspired by children’s author and illustrator, Jarrett Krosoczka. On May 7, Janice Chesser, community health specialist with AZ Health Zone and the Gila County Health Department, visited each school cafeteria to present thank you posters signed by faculty and a few hero gifts from AZ Health Zone to lunch workers. Workers at Payson schools honored as Lunch Superheroes were: Rosa Vazquez, Teresa Lynch and Cesilia Vazquez of Payson Elementary School; Nancy Yanez, Deborah Hill, Karla Bulfin and Heather Benefield of Julia Randall Elementary; Marla Downard, Yudith Bojorquez and Judy Jordan of Rim Country Middle School; and Christi Oft, Vicki Barwick and Christine Doyle of Payson High School.
