STOCKPORT: West Ham United’s Craig Dawson (third R) heads to score during the English FA Cup match against Stockport County at the Edgeley Park. AFP
STOCKPORT: West Ham United staved off potential embarrassment in the FA Cup after a late Craig Dawson header gave them a 1-0 win at National League (fifth tier) site Stockport County in the third round on Monday.
A game that was briefly paused in the 15th minute because of a fireworks display near Edgeley Park failed to light up as West Ham struggled to cope with a cut-up, boggy field and driving rain.
The Hammers, who are just three points off the top four of the Premier League, created few chances before central defender Dawson met a Jarrod Bowen cross from the right and steered the ball into the bottom right corner past home goalkeeper Ben Hinchliffe in the 83rd minute.

Craig Dawson spared West Hamâs blushes as they progressed to the FA Cup fourth round with a 1-0 victory over non-league Stockport at a sodden Edgeley Park.
The driving rain left the pitch resembling a mud bath at full-time and largely negated the gulf in class between the sides, with Stockport having a couple of half-chances to claim one of the roundâs biggest upsets.
But the Premier League side, 86 places above their Vanarama National League opponents, avoided a giant-killing as Dawson headed home from Jarrod Bowenâs right-wing cross seven minutes from time.

West Ham assistant Alan Irvine felt the Premier League side lacked a cutting edge but was ultimately relieved with a 1-0 victory over Stockport in the driving rain at Edgeley Park.
Craig Dawson’s header from Jarrod Bowen’s cross with seven minutes remaining proved the difference in their FA Cup third-round encounter as the Hammers, 86 places above their Vanarama National League opponents, avoided a major upset.
It was a crucial goal in worsening weather conditions, with persistent and heavy rain leaving the pitch resembling a mud bath, which seemed to narrow the gulf in class between the two sides.
