Pedestrian struck, killed by vehicle in South Austin, medics say A pedestrian was killed Sunday evening after being struck by a vehicle in South Austin, Austin-Travis County EMS medics said. Medics responded to the 1800-1900 block of the westbound service road of Ben White Boulevard after receiving a report that a pedestrian had been hit, officials said in a 6:43 p.m. tweet. The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene, medics said. Drivers should expect delays and road closures in the area.

Council members Mackenzie Kelly, Leslie Pool, Pio Renteria and Kathie Tovo all co-sponsored the item. It passed 8 to 3, with Mayor Pro Tem Natasha Harper-Madison joining council members Vanessa Fuentes and Greg Casar in voting against it.

The Austin City Council is poised to ban camping in four areas of the city that have been overtaken by people experiencing homelessness – but will try to make it happen without any of the tools typically used to enforce such a ban. In a watered-down amendment to a heftier proposal to get people off the streets and into supportive housing, Council Member Ann Kitchen made clear Tuesday that policing and citations are no longer on the table as potential punishments for disobeying the ban. The removal of potential legal consequences represented a shift by Kitchen and five council members who co-sponsored her plan. Kitchen unveiled it last month to mixed reviews, with community members saying they are weary over the city s growing crisis and activists saying it s cruel to punish someone on the basis they cannot afford a home and have to sleep outside. 

Japanese Restaurant Ramen 512 Is Closing

Restaurant Shutter Austin Japanese noodle shop Ramen 512 is shuttering its takeout-only restaurant in ghost kitchen hub Kitchen United Mix in the Wooten neighborhood. Its last day of service will be on Sunday, January 17. Owner and chef Vinh Thai always intended that the takeout venture was a temporary one. Now, he’s going to turn his attention to opening a physical restaurant, as he had planned on doing before the novel coronavirus pandemic. Last November, North Austin Korean restaurant Seoulju also closed down its takeout/delivery branch within Kitchen United. Brewery Opening Pinthouse Pizza’s fourth location 2201 East Ben White Boulevard in the McKinney neighborhood is opening this week, as reported by Craft Beer Austin. Dubbed Pinthouse Brewing, the space features the brewery as well as a restaurant. The menu specifically not include pizza; rather, there are sandwiches, salads, and snacks.
