New ICU will replace Archaic 50-year-old facility SHARE ON: Construction is underway to bring more intensive care beds to Nanaimo. Island Health’s Chief Medical Executive Ben Williams said the new state-of-the-art facility at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital will replace the existing one, which opened in 1970. He said it will allow staff to offer the best care possible. “This new ICU is larger, twelve beds rather than 10, its state-of-the-art, the rooms are much larger, we can have all the equipment that we need to provide critical care and we have lifts to keep our staff safe for moving patients, there’s space for dialysis, for breathing machines, for complex infusions of medications, all the complex services that you, or I, or our families might need if we’re really sick.”

Philip Cartwright was found dead on his balcony in Craven Road, Brighton, on the morning of Saturday, August 15 last year, having choked on vomit. The 38-year-old had enjoyed a takeaway curry and some wine with his partner of two years, Ben Williams, the previous evening. At the inquest into his death held at Brighton Coroner’s Court on Monday, the court heard Ben had gone to bed at about 11.30pm on the Friday evening while Philip had stayed up to watch television.

They knew their discipline, information systems, could be a tool in that fight, but weren’t sure exactly how to blend their work with their desire to serve. “I’ve always had a place in my heart for people who tend to be lost or forgotten in society,” Petter says. “Unfortunately, people who are victims of human trafficking often end up being disregarded because of their experiences. Laurie and I discovered our shared interest and often thought we’d like to work together in some way to conduct research on human trafficking.”
